Picking up my wheelie fiance from the Austin on Saturday, an ignorant lady parking in the disabled park next to ours had the gall to ask if we thought it was "alright" for her to park here even though she didnt have a disabled parking permit. Mmmmm.... I pretty much told her to move her car or I would call security and that these parks were for people who needed them etc etc. Needless to say I dont think she'll be doing that again! Seriously though, some people are just nuffies arent they?? I'll continue to challenge people too - some just need to be told directly to really "get it". |

Anytime a gang of us want to gather and do a protest about this subject I'll be their... with bells on ! Thats what I think about this. If the system was used fairly there would be less disabled parking spots needed. |

Hello I was out in the city tonight for dinner " trying to find a parking spot " What a joke ! My van doesn't fit in the high rise parking buildings because the roof is to high on my van, nor the under ground parking. All the disable parking spots were taking. NOT FAIR !! Please fellow disabled parking permit holders help make a noise. Add to this forum, any of your experiences, the more the better. Tell your friends to log onto this site. This site is a great way to gather people thoughts about disable parking. |

REVISED CODE OF THE DISABLED PERSONS’ PARKING SCHEME
In late 2005, a Consultancy Agency was hired by VicRoads and the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) to review the current Disabled Persons Parking Scheme. The review was undertaken in response to the perceptions that disabled persons’ parking spaces are frequently being misused by people who do not appear to have a disability, thereby making it difficult for legitimate permit holders to access the spaces. There were also concerns about forgery, as well as the proliferation of permits as the current eligibility criteria have made it easy to obtain permits. Older people, in particular, many of whom do not have a disability within the eligibility criteria, make substantial calls on the scheme. Currently The Disabled Persons Parking Scheme is administered by local councils. Many of AQA Victoria’s members met with the consultant to voice their concerns. These concerns were then forwarded to VicRoads and the MAV as part of a report. That was in 2006. There haven’t been any updates since then. In the meantime, AQA is regularly receiving queries from members in regards to the Disabled Persons Parking Scheme, and the inadequacies of it. AQA is contacting the parties involved to find out the results of the review and we will let you know what we find out. We will also let you know who the best contact people are to get updates from, just in case you want to contact them directly with your complaints. |

Too many people use permits that they have obtained to take their mum out (probably only once a year!) but use them extensively for great cheap parking. The problem is how to control permits without making them too hard to obtain. I like the system in some US States where number plates must bear the wheelie symbol to use 'crip spots'. That would decrease some abuse. Best response I've had when challenging an obvious AB parking in a Crip Spot was her reply of "I'm a mother of two young children. I need some stuff from the supemarket and you don't realise how hard that is!". With that she locked her car and ran into the shopping centre. I was in no great hurry, so just double parked behind her and turned on the radio. 20 min later she came rushing out and yelled at me to MOVE. I just sat there with the radio blaring. She got buckled in her kids, got into her car, honked, got out and yelled at me to move again. I turned down the radio and said "WHAT, I couldn't hear you!". She said she needed to go so to move - no please or thank you. I just said "well now you can park in that spot as your car is mobility disabled - it can't move! How's it feel?". She threatened to call the police and I said "fine call, your fine will be $145 when they arrive in about another hour". She sulked and got into her car. After another 10 min I let her go but a number of passers by found the whole thing amusing. I get very frustrated but have only done this once as it can be risky but she really Pi$$ed me off with he original respnse, especially as the wheelchair was on my car roof. Hello my name is Paul and I am new to these forums. So I do appoligise if I have done this wrong.
I am a Victorian and I do have a disability parking label for me car, but I get very fustrated with people who have no sticker using them. The same as some people who think only because there is a disability sticker in the car (it may be for mum/dad/grandparent or anther member of the family). Even though they are not with them feel it is perfectly fine to use it any way. Now as I live in a small coastal town neither police or council go out of there way in policing the problem. Which is not good enough as there is not a lot of bays let alone legally fitted parking bays (meaning they are near the curb but they need to be actually partly dug into the curb). And come holiday time they are impossible to gain access to with the increase of traffic. Now I have emailed my local and state members of Parliament as well council and The Hon Bill Shorten MP Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities And Children's Services; Parliamentary Secretary for Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction. Australian Labour Party. Because what I am trying to get approved is a plan where there is a card like the size of a medicare card/companion card is linked to the disability sticker which should have a issue number on it. On the card should be displayed the same issue number as on the disability sticker as well as a photo of the person requiring the sticker (they cannot put your picture on the sticker itself due to privacy laws). But they can on an i.d. card which would fit nicely in a wallet/purse. Meaning your in the disability bay you must have the disability sticker displayed and have with you your i.d. cards as well or be fined this is the only way for it to work and it needs to be Australia wide. So if the sticker is for yourself you hold the card or if it is for a child the parent/guardian holds the card. This way just maybe there might be some better policing done by both the council and the police. So the more we keep pushing they may just fix this poor system we have that does not support us like it should . THANKS FOR YOUR TIME PAUL |

Best story I've heard (no guarantee on validity) was a US wheelie with a big old beat up Chev would block in cars parked without disabled number plates (crip plates are possibly an idea for Australia's new scheme).
When drivers returned to their cars he would only agree to move for an informal $100 'gratuity' otherwise he called the local police on his CB (was before mobile phones). The police knew of his game, but turned a blind eye to it as he donated 50% to charity, an he was doing their job in a small town they didn't have the manpower to do! When he called as people often threatened violence, they'd roll up to find him securely locked in his 'yank tank' and then write out a formal fine to the driver for $145... Not that I'd advocate this to anyone as the risk of vicious 'car park rage' is only too real, but it sounds like a good story. I think Australia needs to have substantial consistent fines to abusers of disabled parking in the new scheme proposed. Policing it could raise as much as a speed camera, if done through private security firms (to not put the burden on cops) as they do with mobile speed cameras. A system of wheelchair symbol number plates like in the US may discourage some abuse but it will still need more control on isue of parking permits. It will be interesting to see what initiatives the national working party comes up with....

hi Leanne ,the area i live is constantly beiing abused by people without a disability permit sticker, im really fustrated all the time as im unable to get a car park which are very limited , people really have the nerve to use our car parks , maybe they need to use the wheelchair and see for themselves how difficult it can be getting in and out of our cars , to make it more annoying without a disable car park and see how they feel, these people i find dont even feel guilty by useing the car parks, where is their respect towards us , we do have an phone no in our town that if a person parks illegally we can contact the officer right away and normally they will be there in 10 minutes and hopefully catch the affending person with a hefty parking fine , it does work sometimes , but we do need more education towards these selfish people, we really need more checking on the the people that abuse it all lyn
